Process Control System
Owner:
City of Elgin, Illinois
Location:
Elgin, Illinois
Project Description:
The City of Elgin, IL provides potable water to its residents and businesses from two water treatment facilities – Riverside Water Treatment Plant and Airlite Water Treatment Plant. In 1999, the City completed its expansion of the water treatment and distribution systems, which included a full upgrade of the city’s automation and communications systems. These modifications provided state-of-the-art systems to monitor and control the utility operations and allowed for water production capacity to be doubled to thirty-two million gallons per day.
Transdyn provided a Distributed Control System for the two plants and a SCADA System for the City’s distribution system storage tanks and pumping stations located throughout their service area.
The system consists of distributed host servers, programmable logic controllers and operator workstations communicating via a plant-wide fiber-optic Ethernet network and point-to-multipoint microwave radios. Redundant processors provide high-availability service for critical process areas and pump stations. A dedicated point-to-point licensed microwave link for host system communications with backup 56K dial-up circuit link the two facilities.
