Project Description:
The Monterey Bay Aquarium project was initiated in 1977 by a group of four marine biologists at Stanford’s Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove. The aquarium opened October 20, 1984. Since then, about 1.8 million people visit the aquarium each year.
Transdyn worked with Johnson Controls to provide an HVAC control system for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. This innovative system utilizes seawater taken in directly from the Monterey Bay located on the northern California coast. The water is transported from the bay and passed through a chiller, lowering the water temperature several degrees. Air conditioning is provided via fans blowing air over the pipes transporting the cooled seawater. The cycle is completed when the cooled water is deposited back into the Monterey Bay. Transdyn’s role included panel fabrication with local and PLC control functions interfacing directly to the HVAC.
