Quarles Water Treatment Plant Process Control System
Owner: Cobb County - Marietta Water Authority
Location: Marietta, GA

Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority (CCMWA) is dedicated to providing safe drinking and fire protection water to its utility customers and the community. CCMWA strives to deliver reliable, quality service, while preserving and protecting our water resources. The Authority has worked with Transdyn over the last ten years to provide mission critical control systems for their Quarles Water Treatment Plant, Quarles Raw Water Pump Station, Wyckoff Water Treatment Plant, Wyckoff Raw Water Pump Station and remote distribution sites.

In the 1980’s, the Authority created a Water Supply Master Plan that detailed methods for handling increased treatment demands prompted by population growth of the service area. As part of the Authority’s overall master plan, work began in 1999 on the Quarles Plant 2 Expansion and Rehabilitation Projects, a decade-long initiative consisting of three separate construction contracts which modernized plant facilities and systems and increased treatment capacity from 64 to 87 million gallons per day (MGD).

As part of the expansion project, CCMWA began working with Transdyn to provide the new SCADA system for automating the Quarles Water Treatment Plant facilities. Managed by iFIX, the system allows operators to more efficiently monitor and control the plant, raw water pump station, and remote sites.

Transdyn has provided software modifications, hardware, fiber optic network, instrumentation, configuration, programmable logic controllers, associated control strategies and programming, start-up services, and maintenance for system enhancement projects that included the addition of new filters and chemical systems.

Currently, Transdyn is serving as CCMWA’s Process Instrumentation and Control System Integrator for the Quarles Plant 2 Rehabilitation project. SCADA system hardware and iFIX software upgrades along with three new remote sites are being integrated into the system. The upgrade provides the Authority greater monitoring and control capabilities and easier system maintenance.
